Didier Faustino “Des Corps & Des Astres” MAGASIN, Centre National d’Art contemporain, Grenoble

From 12th September 2015 until 3rd January 2016, MAGASIN, Centre National d’Art Contemporain in Grenoble, is devoting a solo exhibition to the architect, artist and founder of Bureau des Mésarchitectures Didier Faustino. He develops multi-faceted work blending architecture, performance, installation, video, design and scenography…This monographic exhibition called ‘Des Corps & Des Astres,’ provides an individual as well as collective territory.

With a critical eye, Faustino models the structure of the exhibition on an incessant proliferation of forms over the 1,700m2 art centre in Grenoble. These hybrid forms or narrations question the organisation of social systems governing exchanges among individuals and hence our skills perceiving the political establishment. In this profusion of signs, Faustino associates domestic decor and disastrous landscapes whose transgressive dimension bullies the senses.

While Didier Faustino has just announced the launch of the ‘Fundación Alumnos 47,’ a foundation, library & artist residency of over 1000 m2 in Mexico City, the monographic exhibition at MAGASIN honours 20 years of research by the Franco-Portuguese architect on the relationship between the body and space, dystopia and ‘bio political’ systems. Since 1995, Didier Faustino’s numerous creations and proposed utopias, have adopted an architectural form, the logical continuation of his initial training, and extend from installation to experimentation, from the creation of subversive plastic works to spaces conducive to exacerbating the senses. Characterised by their fictional dimension, their critical stance, their emancipation from codes and their ability to offer unique experiences, several of his works are part of the collections of major institutions: MoMA; Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation; Serralves Foundation; National Contemporary Art Collection; FRAC Centre; Musée national d’art moderne / Centre de création industrielle (Centre Pompidou).

The exhibition ‘Des Corps & Des Astres’ curated by Reiko Setsuda (responsible for cultural and artistic activities, exhibition curator, Maison Hermès in Tokyo, Japan) presents a selection of works from 2010 to 2015, as well as a specific monumental installation called Vortex Populi.
